Co-founders of Phoenix New Times and Village Voice, Michael and Jim started the Frontera Fund. This is an organization that was opened to help the Hispanic community in Arizona. This is simply because they face a lot of racial discrimination in almost evert sector of their lives while in Arizona.
Lacey and Larkin, established the fund after receiving settlement money arising from illegal arrest by Sheriff Joe. It was on October 18, 2007 when armed deputies under Sheriff Arpaio forcibly removed arrested Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. Joe Arpaio is the former sheriff of Maricopa County Arizona who served for a period of 24 years. Although he was branded “America’s toughest sheriff” , Mr. Joe’s career was characterised by a lot of controversies.
Many of these controversies were highlighted in the Phoenix Times which is owned by Lacey and Larkin. This is what continuously angered Mr. Arpaio who eventually arrested the two. Joe’s practises in the law enforcement office have been criticize by many American government agencies.
From the United States Department of Justice to the United States District Courts and American Jewish Committee One of the things Joe was accused, was neglecting the rights of inmates in his county. The county jails were said to have violated the constitutional rights of inmates. Joe was also said to have improperly cleared many cases in Maricopa County and discriminated the Hispanic community due to their race.
Arpaio was outraged for a long time by the Phoenix Times stories that exposed his illegal acts. After a long court battle, Michael and Jim were found innocent. Joe and his office were found to have abused its power and the First Amendment rights. The court found the arrest illegal and the two were to be paid a sum of $3.7 million.
That was when Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin decided to start the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. It is one of the groups that fight for the civil, human and migrant rights.
